The book contains stories about the life and creative path of Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834 - 1907), perhaps the most famous Russian scientist of the 19th century. A person who has discovered the periodic law of chemical elements and left the descendants a periodic table, which is rightfully his name, is perceived as a chemist in the public consciousness. Readers will be interested to know that chemistry work is very small - not more than 30% - a share of Mendeleev’s scientific heritage. Physicist and metrologist, engineer and economist, a fiery fighter for the economic prosperity of Russia - who was this amazing person who, during his lifetime, gained sincere respect and love of compatriots, but deprived of scientific titles and prestigious premiums? This book, of course, will not give you an exhaustive answer, but will allow you to look into the creative laboratory of the great scientist and will open the veil over his personal life, covered with legends. And you will learn that Mendeleev was a fierce opponent of all sorts of myths and superstitions, and the “invention” of Russian vodka attributed to him is one of those legends that he did not like so
