The monograph is devoted to the life and work of the prominent Soviet historian Nikolai Vladimirovich Ustyugov, who acted as the creator of the concepts of early genesis of capitalism in Russia and "free vassalite" of the Bashkirs. The book discusses in detail the problem of the existence of science in the conditions of ideological lack of freedom. Conducting a textual analysis of the scientific works of N.V. Ustyugova, the author traces the adaptation of Soviet scientists to changes in the political course and shows the upholding of their scientific views, independent of the ideological conjuncture. Considering the concepts of N.V. Ustyugov in the context of modern historical science, the author seeks to answer the question of why they did not fix in Russian historiography. The book is written on the basis of the candidate dissertation of the same name
