They were the first popular heroes and the first official heroes of the Soviet Union - the polar pilots who saved the Chelyuskin expedition drifting in the ice, and brave polar explorers, who were not broken by the catastrophe of the sunken steamer. All 104 people were saved. Despite the difficult conditions, not a single pilot or a single polar explorer died. Songs were composed of heroes, they were already talked about in 1934 in school textbooks.
This book includes the memoirs of the participants of those events - polarmen O. Schmidt and E. Krenkel, pilots A. Lyapidevsky, M. Vodopyanova, N. Kamanin, V. Molokov, reports and memoirs of journalists about how the heroes survived in Ice captivity, as they saved and how the Chelyuskintsev was honored
