“Cavalier Bernini’s trip diary” is a unique historical monument. The memoirs of the court dignity Field Frear de Chambelu (1609–1694) reflect the time when the author had a chance to come into contact with the architect and sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, known at that time all of Europe.
On the new side, the era of Louis XIV is illuminated - the time of brilliant achievements, because there are three geniuses in it at once. The first is the artistic genius of Bernini himself. The second is the political genius of Jean-Batista Kolbert (1619–1683), an omnipotent minister who sought to raise France from the devastation into which her war abandoned. The third is the “human” genius of Chantel himself, the observation and knowledge in whose arts are equal to his mental vigilance, combined with an outstanding literary gift.
