The capture of the hospital in Budyonnovsk in 1995 became the largest terrorist attack in the world. Almost 2000 civilians turned out to be hostages, among whom children, babies, women, old people ... They spent many days in a besieged hospital. They died from bullets and fragments, went crazy with fear. The result - 129 dead, 415 wounded. And thousands of crippled fates that were not included in official statistics.
For the first time, terrorists put forward political demands. For the first time they declared themselves as a power that confronts the whole state. And for the first time, our state lost this force.
How could this happen? Who made key decisions? Was there the opportunity to neutralize terrorists without enduring the life of hostages?
Author - an officer of the Alpha special forces and a participant in those events - conducted his own investigation. He met with local residents. With hostages and operatives. With Russians and Chechens. I went to Chechnya to find and ask those who fought on the other side. He interviewed the generals and ex-ministers, from those who gave orders, and from those who followed them. And he found that there was a real plan that allowed to avoid a tragic outcome. And possibly, to stop the emerging epidemic of terrorism in Russia.
