The young Holstein nobleman F.V. Berkhgolts arrived in Russia in the retinue of the Duke of Karl Friedrich Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and stayed here until 1727, when the duke, married to Peter I Anna, left for his homeland. All this time, Berhgolts led a detailed, day after day, a diary, describing in it the life of the royal court and the aristocratic circles of both capitals. Without touching high politics, the Diary of the Bercholts is a unique historical source containing the invaluable material about the Russian court life of the end of the reign of Peter the Great and the beginning of the reign of Catherine I.
