The publication is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of Russian artistic emigration and its individual representatives in the United States between the two world wars. In his introductory article, John E. Bault immerses the reader in the atmosphere of America of those years. Artists - immigrants from the Russian Empire introduced a powerful creative stream into the culture of the New World. The design of performances, including opera and ballet, staging Hollywood films, decorating private and public spaces, book design, art education, easel painting and sculpture are largely owe to the Russian presence.
The book includes ten articles dedicated to the work and life of ten emigrant artists, for whom America has become the second home, despite the fact that most of them have experienced deep nostalgia for the abandoned Russia until the end of their days. Their life attitudes and artistic styles were radically different, the names of some of them are well known to the Russian reader (Gabo, Sudeikin, Burliuk), others are not familiar at all (Graham, Lozovik) But they are united by one thing: all of them did not lose creative energy and somehow managed to succeed in their new homeland, becoming an integral part of American culture. In turn, the authors of the articles attempted to determine the degree of influence of the American environment on the work of artists from Russia, most of which were in the United States being mature masters.
The red line in the book is the idea that the development of Russian art as a whole must be evaluated taking into account the work of artists of Russian emigration in America, but to the question of who they were: Russian Americans or American Russians, the reader will have to answer
