Alexander the Great. The romantic figure of Alexander of Macedon is almost the highest type of conqueror that the story has ever seen. In contrast to Hannibal, Caesar, Friedrich to the Great and even Napoleon, Alexander was a kind, so to speak, artist of his work, who had a final moment, even a practical result, retreated into the background before the internal impulse of creativity. Without looking for anything, not guided by any considerations of a material or ideal nature, he did not know other motive for activity in all his career, except for the immense thirst for conquest, and did not see satisfaction anywhere except in the most conquering process, in the exercise of his abilities.
