In 1945, during one combat campaign on a submarine of the Baltic Fleet S-13, captain of the 3rd rank Alexander Marinesko torpedo and sank two ocean liners, on which more than 8 thousand Germans died. One of the vessels was the second largest ship of the German passenger fleet, Wilhelm Gustlof. Despite all the significance of this fact that many consider to be a feat, Marinesko was not awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union during his lifetime, although such an idea was prepared by his immediate superiors. The high rank was awarded only in 1990, after numerous appeals of public and veteran organizations, almost thirty years after the death of the submariner himself. Despite the restoration of historical justice, interest in the name of A.I. Marinesko did not fade away in our time. Why was he not awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945? Was he really a lecher and a drunkard or all this is the senior of envious people? Was a feat or war crime was the sinking of liners, on board which were many refugees? Is it possible to name the sinking of the “Wilhelm Gustlof” liner event, shaking the Hitler Reich to the base? The authors-compilers of labor tried to answer these and other questions, highlighting the life of Alexander Ivanovich Marinesko with the help of nearly 200 archival documents. The work is designed not only for specialists, but also for the broad circles of the public, which are interested in the fate of A.I. Marinesko, the truth about this very ambiguous figure, which many consider to be a people"s hero
