Alexander II

The book of the famous Russian historian A. I. Yakovlev tells about the life and activities of Emperor Alexander II (1818-1881) from the day of his birth until the day of the tragic death.
During the reign of Alexander II, changes are taking place in the foreign policy of Russia, the accession of new territories in the East, a liberation war in the Balkans, intensive construction of railways, military reform, the development of industry and finance. The Revolution from above by Alexander II significantly accelerated the development of the country, but met fierce resistance from both fearful conservatives and frantic revolutionary radicals.
The author talks about the upbringing and education that young Alexander received, about the preparation and conduct of the great reforms that began in 1861 with the liberation of serfs. The book shows the difficult personal life of the emperor, who turned out to be a hostage to the transformations he had begun.
