The monograph summarizes the ideas about the biogenesis of plant fibers as individual cells characterized by an exceptional length and a powerfully developed cell wall. From a fundamental point of view, individual stages of the development of fibers are characterized: initiation, growth of cells with stretching, the formation of a secondary cell wall, aging and death. The problems of studying fibers are highlighted and approaches to their solution are considered. Two processes specific to the fibers are most detailed - intrusive growth and the formation of a secondary cell wall of a special - gelatinous - type. The monograph is systematized by literary data, however, its basis is the results of original studies of the authors. The results of the analysis of the processes of the formation of fibers using a variety of methods of microscopy, biochemistry, as well as genomics and proteomics are presented.
