Born in 1872, the third child of Viscount Amberley and heir to the earldom, Bertrand Russell became the most influential philosopher of the 20th century. His first masterpiece, Principia Mathematica, co-written with Alfred North Whitehead, set the course for modernist and postmodernist attention to language. But Russell's interest in philosophy was just one side of his insatiable appetite for new ideas. His energy and enthusiasm soon spilled over into the political arena. In his forties, he became a leader of the pacifist opposition to World War I. His anti-war pamphlets and protests led to his expulsion from the university and imprisonment - not for the last time. Russell's personal life was marked by the same indiscriminateness in relationships as his public life. The author of the book "Marriage and Morals," which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, boldly applied his freethinking principles in his closest relationships. Avant-garde philosophy of free love combined with principled pacifism made Russell an international idol of the left in the 1960s. "The Spirit of Solitude" is the first biography of this outstanding figure, attempting to look behind the curtain of Russell's public life and reveal the complex and even contradictory character that has remained incomprehensible until now. Drawing on five years of research, including previously unpublished letters, manuscripts, and articles, world-renowned biographer Ray Monk presents an intimate portrait that emphasizes the dramatic interplay of Russell's philosophical creativity, social responsibility, and erotic impulses. Monk uniquely combines a deep intellectual understanding of Russell's work with insight into his character and a desire to create a superb literary work, an epic biography of novelistic proportions.
