How do grotesque and carnival manifest in fashion? How is fashion related to the art of performance? Can experimental fashion become mainstream? The book of Frances is dedicated to provocative and eccentric phenomena, which led far from the usual ideas not only about high fashion, but also about the body. The author’s focus is the work of designers who went down in the history of fashion with bold experiments: Rey Kawakubo, Georgina Godlie, Martin Marshela, Bernard Wilhelm, master of performances Lee Baueri. They all managed to distinguish between the boundaries of the bodily, shake the generally accepted ideas about the reference body, the absolute of the classical style, about femininity, about the topography of the body itself. Exploring the phenomenon of the grotesque body, which ended up in the center of experiments of fashion designers of the late XX century, the author relies on the theory of grotesque, developed by M.? M. Bakhtin. The phenomena of displacement, deconstruction, the search for the latent meanings of bodily in the field of experimental fashion are considered through the prism of the ideas of Z. Freud, J. Derrida, M. Foucault and other intellectuals. The author’s interview with the participants of unusual performances and the creators of experimental fashion - Li Baueri, Georgina Godlie, entered the book in the 1980s, deploy a wide panorama of ideas, trends, which largely determined a modern attitude to bodily and fashion. Francesca Granat-PhD, associate professor of the Parsons Design School (New York)
