The name of Yevgeny Nikolaevich Chirikov (1864-1932) is not well known to modern readers, yet his works were extremely popular at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The theme of the civil war became particularly important for the writer. As a result, the novel "Beast from the Abyss" appeared, first published in 1924 in Czech (and two years later in Russian), when the writer was in exile. While a stormy debate erupted in the press around the novel, Chirikov sadly wrote to his daughter: "Has no one understood that my 'poem of terrible years' has a purely psychological task of exposing the 'beast' in a person under the influence of fratricidal discord, not a historical one... I would gladly publish my book in all languages so that peoples who have not experienced civil war would turn away from Bolshevism..." This edition includes the author's article "The Smirdyakovs of the Russian Revolution" about the role of Maxim Gorky in the events of that time.
