He was a Russian writer-satirist and editor of the magazine 'Satirikon'. Averchenko's stories and feuilletons were extremely popular in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite the harshest censorship, he managed to talk about aspects of Russian life that could not be shown without fear of administrative and police persecution. The activities of the government and the State Duma, the abuse of power at all levels, various financial scams - all of this is depicted by Averchenko in a caricatured, vivid, and witty manner. The best of his works are included in this book.
