"Arizona! I remember you!" - American pilots shouted over the airwaves as they dropped bombs on Japanese ships. The sinking of this battleship and the loss of 1200 sailors struck at the hearts of Americans throughout the Second World War. On December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor, a bomb hit the powder magazine of the Arizona. Its contents ignited in a matter of moments, literally shaking the heavens. Compartments and passageways turned into furnaces, filled with a thousand charred bodies. The Arizona burned for three days, and for several more days, its scorching deck could not be approached. Like a ship lost in battle under enemy fire, the battleship was awarded the Combat Star. And today, the twisted remains of the massive battleship, transformed into a memorial, rest at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, serving as a communal grave for the crew.
A new book by a leading expert on the history of the American fleet tells in detail for the first time in domestic literature about the creation, construction, and service of the Arizona, as well as its sister ship, the battleship Pennsylvania - the flagship of the series, which for thirty years was the flagship of the US Navy (in 1917, even visited by Admiral Kolchak), actively engaged in combat in the Pacific from the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa to battles in the Philippines, and in 1946 participated in atomic bomb tests as a target ship.
