The possibilities of domestic and foreign operating systems in preventing unauthorized actions by both system users and malicious actors are considered. The main threats to information security, possibilities of malicious software, legal and organizational aspects of information protection using operating system tools are described. Theoretical information about the mechanisms underlying the ability of the operating system to protect processed information is provided, as well as information about the specifics of the operation of specific operating systems, including those of mobile devices.
For the study of the discipline "Operating System Security" and independent work of students in the fields of study 09.03.01 "Informatics and Computer Engineering", 09.03.02 "Information Systems and Technologies", 10.03.01 "Information Security", as well as for students of higher and secondary specialized educational institutions whose future profession is related to the operation of computer equipment.
