As promised, without deceiving,
The sun penetrated early in the morning
With a saffron stripe obliquely
From the curtain to the sofa.
And this means that it is still summer outside and that the 8th issue of 'The Banner' is already ready to meet its readers.
It is opened by, at first glance, the seemingly serene lyrical composition of Alexander Kushner 'Air Castle', and in counterpoint to it sound the anxious and disturbing poetic lines of Kirill Korchagin, Alexander Zakurenko, and Alexander Pyatkov. A substantial fragment and a conversation with the author by Tatyana Veretenova present the novel 'Dmitriy' by Alexey Makushinsky, which is being prepared for book publication. The story by Afanasy Mamedov ''One and a Half Stories' of Mishka Kukes' intrigues with unexpected plot twists, while the novella by Denis Sorokotyagin 'Aby pulvisus (but everyone can give it their own title' does not hide its inner kinship with prose poems. Olga Slavnikova especially notes the delicate stylistic nuancing, the loving attention to the interconnections of classical and contemporary art, recommending Anna Basner's stories to readers.
Such are the historical and current reality through the eyes of 'The Banner's' prose writers. But as a message to contemporaries are read the chapters concluding the publication of the book by Arkady Sosnov 'The Fulfilled Dreams of Natalia Petrovna. From Conversations with Academician Bekhtereva'. New pages from the legacy of Varlam Shalamov are opened by archival publications, prepared by Sergey Solovyov, Darya Gritsaenko, and Valery Yesipov. Nikita Eliseev's sharply provocative hypothesis 'Hitchcock and Nabokov, or Was Nabokov an English Spy?' is acutely provocative. Leonid Vidgof calls his article 'Poems about the Unknown Soldier' by Mandelstam and 'Colonel Chabert' by Balzac' an experience of comparison. Mikhail Efimov brings our attention back to the remarkable composer and educator Alexander Glazunov in the essay 'Music without an Anniversary'.
And again, the present. In the 'Conference Hall', Alexey Alyokhin, Sergey Belyakov, Denis Dragunsky, Ilya Kochergin, Alexander Markov, Artem Skvortsov reflect on the fates of writers who have just begun their path in literature. Olga Balla tells under the heading 'Reassessment' about how today's young poets are seen by their reviewers.
And here is 'The Observer' - our traditional section, where the collection of essays by Olga Sedakova 'On Russian Literature' (Ismail Mustapayev), the fundamental study by Yakov Gordin 'Tsar and God: Peter the Great and His Utopia' (Nikolay Podosokorsky), and the book by Pavel Basinsky 'The True Story of Anna Karenina' (Tatyana Veretenova) are presented. Natalya Rubanova talks about Denis Dragunsky's 'Prose Factory', the collection of poems by Boris Bartfeld 'Corpus solidum / Tangible Body' is analyzed by Elena Sevryugina, the novel in novellas by Arseny Gonchukov 'Proof of Man' is dissected by Shevket Keshfidinov, while Anna Nuzhdina offers her navigation through Andrey Cherkasov's experimental book 'Additional Fields', and Kristina Dergacheva discusses the poetry collection by Dmitry Legeza 'Butterfly Marusya'. The section is concluded with a review by Alexander Markov on the collective work 'Figures of Intuition: The Poetics of Alexey Parschikov' and a response by Elena Solovyova to the tour of 'Theater Lamanova' in Yekaterinburg.
