Each issue of 'Znamya', including this one, can be read sequentially, from the first to the last line. Or you can follow your personal interests and preferences. And then poetry lovers will probably start with a wide selection of the recognized leader of the 'Fergana school' Shamshad Abdullaev, gratefully accept the poems of the oldest translator Evgeny Solonovich, appreciate the originality of the lyrical styles of Vitaly Simankov and Yuri Tsvetkov, discover an extraordinary poet in the recently deceased Vladimir Orlov, our friend, a remarkable publisher and historian of uncensored literature (publication by I. Akhmetiev).
Nourishing in its diversity is the engaging three-part romance (or is it a novel after all?) 'Overkill' by Dmitry Stakhov, the witty selection of 'Embarrassing Silly Cases' by Boris Minaev, the graceful 'Composition No. 3' by Arina Obukh, or the 'Winged Tale' by Evgeny Belodubrovsky, growing out of traditional Jewish mentality according to the laws of memory.
All of this literature transforms life, insisting, however, on its authenticity. But to understand the 'Znamya' journal strategy, publications of non-fiction, supported by accurate facts, are equally important, exploring social and cultural reality in its authenticity. There is no doubt that many will be drawn to the pages of life in the USSR and the extraordinary love story that Tatyana Milovidova-Ventslova resurrects in the memoir 'Leningradka'. And certainly, the autobiographical essay 'Prison' by Alexey Ulyukaev, conveying the unique experience of our regular author, who has been a professor, a minister, and a prisoner in his life, will be read with special attention.
Life and literature in the national tradition are intertwined. This norm is confirmed by Sergey Chuprinin's study 'Almanac Makers', tracing the fate of the famous collections 'Literary Moscow' in the 1950s, and Nikita Eliseev's article 'The Finale of Eugene Onegin', published under the rare rubric 'Hypothesis'. The discussion 'Beyond Paper?' is dedicated to how modern technologies influence (if they do) literary creativity, with the participation of young writers Denis Balin, Anastasia Karpova, Arman Komarov, Alexander Moskvin, Anna Nuzhdina, Boris Ponomarev, Mikhail Rantovich, Konstantin Ryzhov, Pavel Sidelnikov, Anastasia Trifonova. Olga Balla considers literature as a resource, 'recounting' recent interviews with prose writers and poets in print and electronic periodicals.
'Observer' as usual keeps track of cultural news. Tatiana Veretenova talks about 'Chagina' by Evgeny Vodolazkin, Andrey Rosly about the poetry collections of Andrey Polyakov, Kirill Yamshchikov about the novel 'Ways of Communication' by Ksenia Burzhskaya, Mikhail Rantovich about the poetic book by Alexey Porvin, and Lana Lenkova about the 'zaum' experiments of Sofia Surkova. The legacy is not forgotten - Shevket Keshfedinov responds to the monograph by Eleonora Shafranskaya 'Usto Mumin: Transformations', Alexander Chantsev reminds of the almost forgotten novel 'Lepers' by Georgy Shilin, Vladimir Erly's 'Collection of Prose', the master of Russian conceptualism, dedicates his reflections to Alexander Markov. And what about other forms of art? Dmitry Bavilsky draws our attention to the book by Ekaterinburg critic Elena Solovyova about the 'Kolyada Theater' and the personality of its creator. Alexander Laskin talks about lithograph exhibitions by Anatoly Kaplan in St. Petersburg, Natalia Sterkina reports on the international scientific conference 'The Fantastic in Literature and Culture of the Second Third of the 20th Century'.
