Baltic amber

The only amber museum in Russia was opened in 1979 in Kaliningrad. It is located in the serf tower of the middle of the XIX century, which is located on the banks of the upper lake, and carries the name of Feldmarshal General Friedrich Charles Don. During the Napoleonic Wars, he served at the headquarters of the Prussian General A. Lestow and took part in the battle under Prashish Eilau in January 1807. Since 1812, F. Dona was in the Russian service and as part of the Russian-German Legion took part in the liberation war against Napoleonic France. From 1842 he commanded the Army Corps in Königsberg. The exposition of the amber museum is located on three floors of the building and has an area of ​​about 1000 square meters. meters. In content, it is divided into natural science and cultural and historical parts. In the natural science section, various by weight, color scheme, the degree of transparency of amber samples are presented. A significant part of the collection is the samples of amber with inclusions of insects, many-ones, bird feathers and plant residues, etc., which came about 40 million years ago at once viscous resin. In the cultural and historical section, decorations and objects of life from amber from the era of Neolithic to this day are collected. The works of the XVII-XVIII centuries, transferred to the Museum from the Greaming Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin in 1979, are of particular value. The large exhibition complex is devoted to Konigsberg State Amber Manufactory and the Kaliningrad Amber Plant. A significant part of the exposition occupies the work of modern artists of Russia, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, USA, France, Japan: jewelry, small plastic, interior objects. The amber museum every year organizes more than 30 exhibitions and projects in Kaliningrad, in Russia and abroad, which attend about 200 thousand people. The museum collection includes 15 thousand items, the specialized library is the best in the country.
