Reprint from the edition. St. Petersburg, 1882.
Konstantin Apollonovich Skalkovsky (1843-1906) was an administrative official and writer. A passionate ballet enthusiast and a connoisseur of the art, he was the creator of the first work on the history of ballet in the Russian language. This book is the first domestic study of the history of Russian and European ballet. The author is hidden behind the pseudonym 'Balletoman'. The writer harshly but objectively assessed the Russian theater audience, pointing out their low culture, lack of taste, and misunderstanding of ballet. This book was intended to change this situation. It stood at the origins of the formation of ballet audience culture, introducing readers to the history of ballet, names, and talents, teaching what should be valued in ballet and how to approach it. K. Skalkovsky showed the place of ballet among the fine arts and proved its greatest aesthetic value. He began to demand subtlety from ballet dance, perfect compliance with the canons, and shaped the very ideas of the aesthetic canon. The actor's performance in dance should be characterized by psychological depth and individuality. The history of European and Russian ballet is presented, telling about the great ballet actors, their techniques, roles, and destinies. The opinions of the most authoritative European historians and ballet critics are cited. In addition, the author talks about the artistic traditions of stage design and the best artists known in this field.
The edition consists of 30 copies produced using print-on-demand technology.
