Bacterial vaginosis is a dysbiosis of the lower part of the female reproductive tract, but it can be the cause of a number of pathologies, including premature births and the birth of premature babies, cervicitis, chorioamnionitis, and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs. Women with bacterial vaginosis also have a higher susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections transmitted sexually. The monograph provides data on the functioning of protective and pathogenic vaginal flora, local innate and adaptive immune systems in bacterial vaginosis, and discusses the mechanisms of action of numerous antimicrobial peptides. Modern concepts of pathogenesis and challenges in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis are analyzed. This publication is intended for obstetrician-gynecologists, including professors of relevant departments of medical universities, as well as specialists in microbiology, biochemistry, and pathological physiology.
