Since its inception, cinema has been shaped as a new public sphere reflecting important social shifts at the turn of the century, which were manifested not only in screen works but also in audience practices. The book by University of Chicago professor Miriam Hansen (1949-2011) explores the close connection between the formation of the early American cinema audience and the transformation of business and private life. In the first part of the study, using the metaphor of Babylon as the title, the author shows how cinema, in the process of creating 'spectatorship,' addressed the task of integrating ethnically, socially, and gender diverse groups into a unified culture of consumption. The second part is dedicated to a detailed analysis of Griffith's film 'Intolerance,' which is considered the starting point for modern film-audience relationships. In the third part, the author delves into the phenomenon of the movie star using Rudolph Valentino as an example, analyzing his cult in the context of Hollywood's commercial interests and the new feminine subculture.
