In the summer of 1637, the Don Cossacks captured the powerful Turkish fortress of Azov, which had a 4,000-strong garrison and 200 guns. The Cossacks defended her for 5 years, withstanding the most severe siege of a huge Turkish-Tatar army in 1641. An unexpected answer was received to the royal authorities sent to Moscow to take a petition to Moscow: to clear the basics and return it to the Turks. In the summer of 1642, the Heroes-Cossacks" in the Great Sorrow left the fortress, having previously destroyed its most important fortifications. And yet, after 54 years, Russian banners are again fluttering under the walls of Azov. The second brilliant assault on the fortress, with the support of the Russian fleet, made the troops of Peter I. The new book of the historian A.V. Venkov tells about these and other glorious pages of Russian military history
