This classic collection of articles, first published in 1979, has had and continues to have a significant impact on philosophical works about the nature of law and its relationship to morality. The author begins with an analysis of the concept of authority and the claims of law to moral authority. He then offers a detailed explanation of the nature of law and legal systems, presenting arguments in favor of legal positivism. He then examines areas of legal thought that were considered imbued with moral values, such as the social functions of law, the ideal of the supremacy of law, and so on. The concluding part of the book describes the proper moral attitude of citizens towards the law. The author raises the question of whether citizens have a moral obligation to obey the law and whether there is a right to express dissent. In two appendices, he develops his views on the nature of law, engaging in a dialogue with the works of Hans Kelsen and responding to criticism of legal positivism from Robert Alexy.
