Ivan Antonovich (Antipovich) Efremov (1908-1972) is an outstanding Russian Soviet fantast, a paleontologist, creator of taphonomy (scientific discipline, which explains how and why the remains of extinct animals and plants are preserved), philosopher-cosmist and social thinker. Since the mid-1920s, his life has been held on expeditions, in many bringing valuable finds and discoveries.
The plot basis of each of the stories included in the collection was an old tradition. The head of the geological party in the assault on the impregnable peak of the White Horn (and at the same time the heart of the adamant colleague) helps the legend of the brave batyr, who conquered this rock three centuries ago. The study of old copper mines near Orenburg covers the dramatic events that happened here at the time of serfdom, shortly before its cancellation. The found old ship reveals the veil of secrets over sea travels in the 18th century.
