Alexander Valentinovich Amphitheatrov is a famous publicist and fiction writer. His contemporary Ivan Shmelev wrote about him: "... He is a Russian writer of a wide scope ... an indefatigable Russian talent is a character, sometimes spent without a measure.
While still a student of the law faculty of Moscow University, amphitheaters collaborated in humorous magazines" Shards" and "alarm ”as a feuilletonist. Then his acquaintance with A.P. Chekhov took place, who made a great impression on the young author. Amphitheatrov dedicated the memoir outline and the story "Detective", presented in this edition.
Amphitheatrov’s appeal to artistic prose was largely dictated by his experience of a publicist. The “human document”, a “special case” - this is the necessary objective basis of a fiction work, considered amphitheaters.
