Romain Rollan (1866-1944)-an outstanding French writer, public figure, musician scientist. Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1915), Foreign Honorary Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1932) Rollan associated a lot with Russia. He conducted active correspondence with L. N. Tolstoy. He greeted the Russian revolution, but did not approve of its violent methods. Since the 20s, he talked with A. M. Gorky, received an invitation to Moscow, where he met and talked with I.V. Stalin. Subsequently, in a letter addressed to the leader, he tried to join for the repressed, but did not receive an answer.
In the novel "Clerambo" (1920), the atmosphere of the beginning of the First World War is reproduced (1914-1918) The poet Arenor Clerambo in the wake of patriotism welcomes the war with Germany, but very soon there is insight: his son-fobe dies at the front. Having switched to anti -war positions, Clerambo becomes an outcast: all French society is taking up against it ...
