Rnest William Hornung (1890-1921)-English writer, creator of a series of books about Arthur Ruffles, amateur cracker of Victorian England. The first collection of stories about his adventures was published in 1899 under the name "The Amateur Cracksman". Stories about the "high moral" thief Raffles and his henchman Menders brought the author of national fame. A curious detail: Hornung Shurin was none other than Arthur Conan Doyle, and his heifer Raffles, anti-heroist with aristocrat manners, many contemporaries perceived as a parody of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Doyla was not embarrassed by this caricature borrowing, and Hornung openly recognized the influence of his famous relative.
