Samuel Lenghorn Clemens, the world-famous American satirist and I journalist Mark Twain (1835-1910)-a magnificent expert on the colloquial language, a subtle observer of American life and a brilliant storyteller. Mark Twain in our country is known more as the author of Tom Soyer and Haeckelberry Finn. In fact, many humorous works belong to his pen, including little known in Russia
The novel "Gilded Age" (1874), which gave the name of the whole era, was written by Twain in collaboration with the stylistically unlike him by the New English writer C. Warner. This explains the very uneven style of the book. There are chapters with a shade of sentimentality in it, you feel the usual tendency to “happy” endings for American literature. But, at the same time, the work is saturated with parodies for fashion novels and traditional situations of that time, toxic-sarcastic portraits of crooking politicians, high-ranking thieves, dark manipulators setting tone in the US capital.
