Released for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding navigator Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern and the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society, at the origins of which Kruzenshtern stood, this book presents to the reader the scale of scientific, research, and pictorial-graphic work carried out by the participants of the first Russian circumnavigation. The Atlas of the first circumnavigation is the largest edition of Russian engraving from the beginning of the 19th century and remains one of the valuable iconographic sources in the field of ethnography to this day.
Kruzenshtern personally dealt with the publication of the original Atlas. Published copies, located in Russian and foreign collections, have a different number of engravings, their sequence, numbering, and signatures. In the presented edition, all available color images (which is rare) are defined in a standard order, descriptions of each illustration are given, and the creators of the drawings and engravings are identified based on a multitude of existing Atlases and accompanying literature.
For the first time in the Atlas, scientists identified the names of the flora and fauna depicted by Tilezius in accordance with the currently accepted scientific systematization.
In addition to the Atlas itself, the book contains a large amount of additional material: articles about I.F. Kruzenshtern and the first Russian circumnavigation, about the cartographic legacy of the expedition, and about the Atlas itself, its foreign editions, and the history of its creation.
The Kruzenshtern Atlas was released in a gift edition, in two languages, Russian and English.
