The memoirs of General V.N. von Dreyer, titled "At the Sunset of the Empire," were written after the Second World War and published in 1965, when the general was approaching his ninetieth birthday. However, he only managed to narrate the story up to the beginning of the Russian Civil War - a fateful divide that separated the destinies of many Russian people into "before" and "after." Vladimir von Dreyer was a Russian man, albeit with German roots, Orthodox, from a family of hereditary military personnel. He never envisioned a fate other than military service for himself. He served in Turkestan, in garrisons on the western border, studied at the General Staff Academy in St. Petersburg, and fought in the First World War... Von Dreyer fought heroically, finding himself on the hottest frontlines, for example, he was one of the few officers who managed to break out of the fierce fighting in the infamous Augustow Forests. His life was not only full of various adventures but also unusual encounters. Many famous historical figures were simply friends, acquaintances, and comrades to him... He served with Brusilov, Kornilov, Wrangel, and knew well most of the famous generals of the first quarter of the 20th century. The future Soviet Marshal Shaposhnikov, as a young officer nicknamed "boy Borya," found himself under von Dreyer's command... He remembered and told many interesting stories, doing so passionately, with a remarkable, rich Russian language, humor, and unusual details, as they say, "from the heart"...
