The author is a rebel-revolutionary, a member of the Menshevik party. He fought against the monarchy and, as a result, was persecuted by it. After the October Revolution, he also became an undesirable element. From 1918 to 1922, he endured the fires of Soviet prisons, solitary confinement, and hunger strikes, not only surviving but also managing to maintain his human dignity. The experience of being in captivity was difficult but not deadly. After being released from prison and the advent of the New Economic Policy (NEP), the author, as someone unwelcome to the new authorities, was exiled abroad, where in 1929, in Berlin, this book was first published. His essays are dedicated not only to describing prison life but also to depicting life in Russia at the dawn of the Red Terror. If in countries of political lawlessness, prison is always a mirror of life, then this phenomenon is even more pronounced in revolutionary times.
