The Hero of the Roman returns from Italy to St. Petersburg - there, where he had a house where there was love left in letters and memories, returns to the mountains, friends of youth, to music, he would like to regain the life left to the bottom of the years. But soon it is retracted to ideological and political conflicts of modernity. The strong feelings of the hero, an independent thought, the will to decisive actions are rapidly moving the plot, create another intrigue in each chapter. The dynamic story fits the details of the Petersburg, Moscow, Japanese, Parisian life of the hero. The real persons belonging to his relative and friendly circle, as well as the world of historical science, Russian and European politics, are described in the novel, and real events are described, although some of them are shifted in time.
