The new book by Professor O.A. Gomazkov, a well-known scientist and science popularizer, explores an unusual aspect of the brain's function. In this new context, the role of astrocytes - star-shaped cells - is described. Their function is shown to be more complex than the traditional view of them as an 'elastic framework' providing only metabolic support to the brain. The book presents the 'astrocyte concept', highlighting this system as an organizing 'service' of a special nature. Arguments are presented that formulate a new perspective on the role of astrocytes in managing higher functions such as memory, cognitive processes, and intelligence. The book is aimed at readers intrigued by the mysteries of the physiology and biochemistry of the modern brain, as well as scientists, medical professionals, graduate students, and undergraduates interested in the problems of neurobiology, neurophysiology, and psychiatry.
