A compelling exposition of modern relativism regarding truth and epistemology by the outstanding director and writer Errol Morris. He bases it on his personal interactions with Thomas Kuhn, one of the most influential practitioners of this approach. But the book has a little bit of everything. Interviews with philosophers and scientists are intertwined with stories of many of my favorite authors (Lewis Carroll, Russell, Borges) and discussions of concepts such as reference, natural kind, paradigm, and incommensurability. Everywhere we find, as we have come to expect from him, Morris's desire to get to the truth. This time about the truth itself. - Saul Kripke
Errol Mark Morris (born February 5, 1948) is an American director known for his documentary films. His 1988 documentary "The Thin Blue Line" is cited among the best and most influential documentaries ever made. In 2003, his documentary "The Fog of War" won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
At the beginning of his career, he was a student of Thomas Kuhn, the author of "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions." One discussion of the ideas in this book, in which Morris expressed his disagreement with Kuhn, ended with Kuhn throwing a heavy glass ashtray at Morris.
The ashtray is Morris's vendetta against Kuhn.
