The book is the first monograph on one of the most unexplored layers of Russian culture - female icon painting. The author traces his history in the context of the artistic and spiritual life of Russia, from sources to the beginning of the Soviet era. The causes and patterns of the Russian women are revealed to this type of creativity, the main stages of formation and centers of female icon painting. The temporary and geographical boundaries of its distribution, the social and national composition of the craftswomen are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the miraculous icons of the female brush. All this allows you to scatter the myth, deeply rooted in the minds of Russian society, about the illegality of female icon painting. The work is based on a huge archival and actual material collected by the author for almost 30 years. He was paid to much attention: the text is accompanied by vast applications (materials for the dictionary of church artists, women"s icon -painting workshops, lists of icons with attributive inscriptions and miraculous icons) The relevance of the topic is due to the basic problem of the humanities, striving for a comprehensive study of culture and man as its creator and carrier.
