This publication is a collection of works (monographs and articles) of outstanding Russian legal scientists of the beginning of the twentieth century, dedicated to the preparation of the new university charter and reform of higher education, which was called the “university issue”. The center of this reform was the question of improving students" training and improving the teaching methods of academic disciplines, including the ratio of lecture and seminar (practical) classes. During the broad public discussion of the “university question” by the participants in this acute discussion, diametrically opposite views regarding the content, methods and prospects of domestic university teaching (which were at that time was at a very high level, not inferior to most European universities) were expressed and substantiated. The main content of this collection is the work of the leaders of the two main confrontant directions - L.I. Petrazhitsky, who defended the preservation and development of traditional, classic principles in university education, and P.E. Kazan, who was a supporter of cardinal transformations in order to strengthen a practical orientation in the training of students. In addition, this collection includes the articles of the Corifers of Russian Civilism - D.I. Meyer and I.A. Pokrovsky, as well as Professor V.V. Esipova and Privat-Docent K.K. Dzonovsky, devoted to the problems of improving university teaching of legal disciplines, including civil law. All these works are of particular interest in the light of the current reform of the domestic higher school at present. The publication is designed for teachers and graduate students of law universities and faculties, as well as university teachers of other humanitarian specialties and all those interested in the problems of the development of domestic higher education
