The theory of atmospheric electricity phenomena

The book of an outstanding domestic theoretical physicist Ya.I. Frenkel (1894-1952) proposed to the reader, in which experimental material about the tension of the electric field at the earth"s surface is generalized, about air conduction and its ionization at various heights, about voluminous charges, etc. Contains a modern theory of atmospheric electricity. According to Frenkel’s theory, the electric field of the atmosphere is explained by the entire electrical phenomena occurring in the troposphere, --- polarization of the clouds and their interaction with the ground, and the ionosphere does not play a significant role in the course of atmospheric electrical processes.
Although many issues of the theory of atmospheric electricity are still not finally resolved, the author outlined the main directions of further research: determining the nature of the processes leading to tremendous electrification of thunderclouds, in order to predict and manage them, clarify the role of electric forces in the formation of clouds and precipitation, the possibility of reducing the electricalization of aircraft and increasing flight safety, as well as revealing the secrets of the formation of ball lightning.
