The book is devoted to the study of the interaction of the new science of the psychology of masses and European and Russian art of the late XIX - first decades of the 20th century. The author considers both direct influences and indirect contacts of art with the social mythology of his time, various strategies for using social mythology in art, various ways to involve art in constructing new social myths. In the center of the study is the psychology of crowds formed in the writings of psychologists and sociologists (Lebon, S. Siegel, G. Tard, N. Mikhailovsky, V. Bekhterev) and had a significant impact on the culture of his time. The ideas and images that came from the books of sociologists and psychologists have become widespread and became a source of many visual motifs, metaphors and plots in literature and visual arts.
