The monograph is devoted to the literary and scientific heritage of the famous French writer, historian, philosopher, thinker, diplomat and statesman F.R. De Chateobrian, whose scientific works for many decades were practically not known to the Russian reader. Being the founder of French romanticism and laying the basic elements of this direction of culture, F.R. De Chatebrian nevertheless causes numerous disputes and questions. The monograph shows the process of becoming a romantic worldview of the writer on the example of his early works, still preserving traces of literature of the 18th century and already carrying new romantic trends of the 19th century. The facts of the writer’s biography are also set out and an analysis of a number of his historical works devoted to medieval France. Starting from the Renaissance and until the end of the 18th century, one of the elements of medieval architecture and the Christ-Ansky religion-Gothic architecture-was perceived as something negative, barbaric, rude, completely uncertained the aesthetics of the 16th-XVIII centuries. F.R. De Chatebrian was one of the first researchers who discovered the beauty of Gothic temples and the color of national history to the mass reader of the turn of the 18th -19th centuries. The rehabilitation of Gothic architecture was committed by F.R. De Chatebrian in his treatise Genius of Christianity. The famous “forest theory” of the origin of Gothic helped “remove” the negative assessments of the Middle Ages and influenced the formation and development of romanticism both in France and other European countries. It is the idea of ​​F.R. De Chatebriand on the relationship of medieval architecture and Christian consciousness had an influence on the whole subsequent development and formation of the history of medieval art.
