The monograph illuminates the history of complex relationships of symbolists and mass culture, which developed against the backdrop of the revolutionary transformation of Russian society in the late XIX - early XX centuries. A full-fledged study of this issue was difficult in different years for ideological reasons and in connection with the distinction of the culture of the beginning of the last century not quite corresponding to reality to the “mass-niz” and “elitist-high” during the unconditional assignment of the symbolists as the latter. This study shows the role of symbolists as thinkers in the formation of projects of the future and at the same time as authors of new communication practices with an audience used in mass culture. The author is not limited to symbolism and demonstrates on the example of futurism and creativity V.V. Mayakovsky that these practices developed by other modernists and, despite their commercial nature, were preserved after the 1917 revolution. The book is intended for all those interested in Russian culture and history
