The monograph is devoted to the most important problem of relevant literature - the analysis of the image of a cultural hero that can respond to the challenges of time. The idea of creating a book arose after the image of the hero of the modernity in the prose of the border of the 20th -20th centuries, held at the end of October 2021 of the International Scientific Seminar (Jagellon University) The forum made it possible to correlate the view of modern Russian literature, a culture that formed inside the metropolis, with outside judgments, which opened new research prospects, expanded the space of dialogue. The work in one way or another is subordinated to the general logic of the world literary process. The text includes three sections, each of which reflects the key issues of the vast literature: from the search for a real hero that can correspond to the civilizational challenge (first part) through the analysis of the vectors of psychologism - the principles of the character image and the conceptuality of the form (second part) - up to the analysis of relations by the author - The hero, who no longer fit into the classical paradigm of compassion, mercy of the artist in relation to a little person, the new Bashmachkin, humiliated by the story itself, where he has no place - he is always a stranger (the third part)
