The evolution of the aesthetic views of Varlam Shalamov and the Russian literary process of the 1950-1970s

Barlam Shalamov lived a long life in which almost the entire XX century fit: a revolution, the violent literary life of the twenties, the years of suffering in Kolyma, and after the camp - a thaw, the heyday of the “new world” and the onset of stagnation. Of the hundreds of poems, essays, notes, articles and memories, a portrait of a century is formed through the eyes of a writer who created one of the most terrible books of Russian literature - “Kolyma Stories”. Ksenia Filimonova’s book is dedicated to Shalamov’s life after the camp, his literary connections, thoughts of how to write “after the shame of Kolyma” and work on his own method, which he called the “new prose”. The author considers the almost thirty-year process of the aesthetic evolution of V. Shalamov, trying to overcome the stereotypical idea of ​​the writer and in a new way to determine his place in the literary process of the 1950–1970s, the active participant of which he was.
