The story of Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873-1950) "Summer of the Lord" is one of the brightest and most joyful books of world literature. He wrote it for more than twenty years, in adulthood, having survived two world wars, three revolutions, emigration, the execution of his son, hunger and poverty, departure from his beloved capital to other people"s inhospitable European capitals, Berlin and Paris. Nevertheless, he managed to restore all the sweet and joyful impressions of childhood.
In his work, the author recreated a picture of the life of old Moscow, morals and habits of people, their lovely errors and funny actions, conveyed all that frenzied love for the motherland, which he carried through decades of his life in a foreign land. He described the customs, life’s life, the Orthodox traditions of that old Russia that we have lost forever. That is why this book can be considered an artistic feat and the invaluable gift of the writer to subsequent generations of readers, without without Books by Shmelev who had not recognized him the warm and cozy Orthodox Moscow of the late XIX - early twentieth century and those wonderful people who then inhabited it.
