In the history of ancient Russian art, there are special periods when the brilliant flowering of all types of artistic activity was associated not only with the successful economic and spiritual development of the country, but in many respects was determined by the initiative and energy of outstanding personalities of the state. One of them can be rightly called St. Macarius - a key figure in the Grozny era of Russian history, who first occupied the Archbishop’s department in Novgorod, and then the Metropolitan throne in Moscow. The years of his Novgorod rule have a new stage in the development of the ancient city, the highest rise in all forms of art. Active stone construction of temples was accompanied by the creation of high iconostases, their decoration with icons, sewing, illuminated books, wooden carvings, precious utensils.
