In the history of ancient Russian art, there are special periods when the brilliant flowering of all types of artistic activity was associated not only with the successful economic and spiritual development of the country, but in many respects was determined by the initiative and energy of outstanding personalities of the state. One of them can be rightly called St. Macarius - a key figure in the Grozny era of Russian history, who first occupied the Archbishop’s department in Novgorod, and then the Metropolitan throne in Moscow. The years of his Novgorod rule have a new stage in the development of the ancient city, the highest rise in all forms of art. Active stone construction of temples was accompanied by the creation of high iconostases, their decoration with icons, sewing, illuminated books, wooden carvings, precious utensils.
The book includes the texts of the Novgorod icon painters and the “cunning” of the era of the Lord of the Lord Macarius Irina Shalina, "Amvon of the Novgorod Sofia Cathedral of 1533. The artistic originality, plan, interpretation of Olga Klyukanova and "about the second name of the city amvon (“Chaldean Cave”) and the cave of Karina Charykova, as well as more than 250 color reproductions
