The architecture of the Soviet avant-garde in the 1920s-mid-1930s attracts more and more attention of domestic and foreign researchers, but, despite this, entire regions remain unexplored. Until recently, one of them was the south of Russia. Materials presented in this guidebook are the result of large-scale research in the South and North Caucasus Federal Districts: Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov regions, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea, Kalmykia, Caucasian mineral waters, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia and Chechnya .
The state of the architectural heritage deserves special mention. In the south of Russia, during the Second World War, there were active hostilities, accompanied by mass destruction. During the post -war recovery, many buildings were rebuilt in neoclassical forms, and a whole layer of objects that were stylistically related to the vanguard was lost. In the post -Soviet years, the operation of structures was no less destructive. Therefore, in the guidebook, the objects in question are divided into two blocks - preserved and forever lost. Fortunately, readers of this book will be able to see 100 extraordinary buildings of the Soviet avant -garde era with their own eyes
