Small industrial cities: an update of heritage

Work with the historical and cultural heritage in small industrial cities of the Urals, inscribed in the landscape and connected by a dense, historically-contributed system of resettlement, is a condition for their survival and development. The author shows the basis of the stability of this system, the specifics of the architecture of industrial buildings and complexes, the daily culture of the region. The processes of rehabilitation of the heritage are directly associated in working with the change in the attitude of residents to objects and territories, their prerequisites are determined during a sociological survey of residents of small cities of the Ural region of 2017-2019. The methods and cases introduced into the scientific circulation work with the historical and cultural heritage in different regions of the world are selected taking into account current economic, demographic, social processes in small Russian cities, which increases the effectiveness of their possible use. The author’s methodology for the rehabilitation of historical and cultural objects or territories of small cities involves seven stages and includes the integration of the degrading historical and architectural object or territory in the urban environment, the restoration of their status as part of the city, the achievement of the state of “stability” as a result of the creation of natural-anthropogenic integrity new level, realization of the potential of the territory to achieve strategic goals of the development of the city.
