Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (1801-1872)-an outstanding Russian writer, scientist-research, ethnographer, author of textbooks on some sections of biology, military doctor.
During service in the Southern Urals, he traveled the entire region, collected folklore materials, was engaged in natural science. His collections in the flora and fauna of the Orenburg Territory served as the basis for the election of it as a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
But Dahl considered the study of the language of the Russian people the main thing of his life. One of the first Russian writers, he began to write fairy tales and stories from folk life with the language, as the people said. So beautiful tales, parables, riddles, proverbs and sayings appeared.
V.I. brought the greatest glory Dalya unsurpassed in volume “Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language”, the compilation of which the writer took 53 years. The dictionary contains about 200 thousand words and 30 thousand sayings, riddles and sayings.
Dal closely talked with the best writers of his time: A.S. Pushkin, V.A. Zhukovsky, I.A. Krylov. N.V. Gogol. Pushkin told the young Dal: “And what kind of luxury, what a meaning, what a lot is in every saying! What kind of gold! .. ”
The most tragic meeting with Pushkin was the participation of a doctor Dahl in the treatment of a wounded poet after a duel with Dantes. Dahl remained with Pushkin until the last minute.
