Soon after the outbreak of the Crimean war, the young lieutenant Lev Tolstoy at the personal request was transferred to Sevastopol. The future writer fought on the famous 4th bastion and wrote notes about battles, army life, and military hospital. Later they formed in the artistic essays "Sevastopol in the month of December", "Sevastopol in May", "Sevastopol in August 1855", which differ, perhaps, the best description of the battle scenes in Russian literature.
